Private Kindergarten Curriculum

The balanced literacy approach by Lucy Calkins and Colleagues introduces Reading and Writing Workshops. The Reading Curriculum consists of a reading workshop where students are introduced to mini-lessons designed to teach a strategy or skill. Shared reading is also a key component of our reading curriculum which focuses on comprehension, word solving, and using visual cues to figure out difficult words. Students explore a variety of fiction storybooks and non-fiction titles during reading Alouds.

Our Writing Curriculum mirrors the Reading Curriculum by utilizing workshops with mini-lessons, interactive writing, and word study. Students focus on a strategy or skill used for writing a particular genre, the sharing of a pen between student and teacher, phonemic awareness, high-frequency words, parts of words, etc.

Math Curriculum

Our Math Curriculum, by Debbie Diller, introduces math workstations which are areas in the classroom where students work with a partner and use instructional materials to explore and expand their mathematical thinking.  The Math Curriculum consists of a literacy based mini lesson followed by workstations with a partner, independent stations, and math journals.

  • Reinforces and extends prior instruction
  • Practice problem solving by reasoning, representing, communication and making connections
  • Teacher observes and interacts with individuals at work stations and meets in small groups
